Windows 11 To Introduce Local Backup Tool For Easy PC-to-PC File Transfers

Microsoft seems to be developing a new backup and transfer tool for Windows 11 aimed at simplifying the process of moving files and settings from an old PC to a new one. Currently available to Windows Insiders, the feature is expected to roll out to the general public soon.

Reported by Neowin, the new tool allows users to perform local transfers between two Windows 11 devices connected over the same network. This system-backed migration covers not just personal files but also user preferences and system settings, offering a more complete and seamless onboarding experience on a new computer.

To begin the transfer, users must open the Windows Backup app on their current PC and choose the option to “transfer information to a new PC.” The app then generates a unique connection code that links both devices. Once connected, users can select specific folders and files they wish to move. After confirming the selection, clicking “Start Transfer” initiates the process over the local network.

At the end of the transfer, Windows displays a summary screen outlining all the items successfully moved to the new machine. This confirmation helps users verify that essential data and settings have been carried over before finalizing the setup of their new PC.

However, there are some limitations to what can be transferred. Installed programs, encrypted storage drives, system files, and OneDrive data are not included in the local backup. Notably, OneDrive content is excluded because Microsoft provides its own cloud-based backup solution for it.

The tool is designed to make PC upgrades and replacements less time-consuming and more user-friendly, especially for users who are not comfortable manually transferring files or reconfiguring settings. With a streamlined interface and step-by-step guidance, it offers a straightforward solution for personal and home users looking to migrate their digital environment to a new device.
