Unicode 17.0 Adds 8 New Emojis Including Bigfoot, Orca, And Fight Cloud

Unicode 17.0 has been officially approved and will introduce eight new emojis to digital platforms. The update includes a mix of whimsical, expressive, and culturally relevant symbols, expanding the visual vocabulary users can draw from in digital communication.

The newly approved emojis are:

  • Dancer
  • Furry Creature (commonly interpreted as Bigfoot, Yeti, or Sasquatch)
  • Apple Core (partially eaten apple)
  • Fight Cloud (comic-style cloud indicating a scuffle)
  • Orca (killer whale)
  • Face with Wide Eyes (distorted face showing surprise or shock)
  • Trombone
  • Treasure Chest

These emojis aim to enhance the expressiveness and diversity of conversations across platforms. According to Erik Thompson, a Unicode spokesperson, app developers and platform providers are expected to update their emoji fonts to support these new icons in the coming months.

The Unicode 17.0 standard is scheduled for release in spring 2026, meaning that these emojis should become widely available on major platforms, such as iOS and Android, by fall 2026. The exact rollout may vary depending on how quickly companies implement the new standard into their systems.

In related news, Apple marked World Emoji Day 2025 by launching a new interactive game in Apple News+, where users solve puzzles by completing words using clues provided in the form of emojis. This initiative reflects the growing cultural relevance of emojis, not only as tools for expression but also as sources of entertainment and creativity.

Unicode Consortium continues to play a key role in standardizing emoji usage across devices, ensuring that symbols appear consistently regardless of the platform. With Unicode 17.0, the range of available emojis grows once again, offering users even more ways to convey emotions, ideas, and humor in digital conversations.

While these new emojis are not yet visible on devices, users can expect to see them integrated into their keyboards and messaging apps following the Unicode 17.0 rollout next year. Updates will depend on each platform’s development cycle and adoption timeline.
